Oasis’ ‘Live Forever’ Named UK’s Greatest Song in Historic Top 500
Radio X has published a vastly expanded listener countdown, and Oasis again leads the pack. Their 1994 single ‘Live Forever’ topped the chart for a fourth straight year. The band’s high-profile 2025 reunion tour helped fuel renewed interest.
A landmark expansion
The station broadened its annual Best of British list from a Top 100 to a Top 500. Programming from Radio X Classic Rock and decade-specific outlets was folded into the survey. The result offers a wider view of Britain’s musical legacy.
Top positions and tributes
Oasis placed three tracks inside the top five. ‘Live Forever’ was at number one, with ‘Slide Away’ at four and ‘Champagne Supernova’ at five.
Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ held second place for the third consecutive year. The Stone Roses climbed to third with ‘I Am The Resurrection’. That climb doubled as a public tribute after bassist Mani died in November.
Veteran acts and posthumous entries
Rock legends saw renewed attention across the list. After Ozzy Osbourne’s death last year, Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’ entered the Top 100 at number 69.
Solo tracks by Ozzy also featured inside the full 500, including ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Mama I’m Coming Home’.
Decades and demographics
The 1990s proved the most prominent era on the list. More than 26% of entries dated from that decade, reflecting enduring Britpop appeal.
Geography also shaped the results. London supplied the most songs with 148 entries, followed by Manchester with 91.
New blood and recent winners
Contemporary acts made notable showings. Wolf Alice’s ‘The Sofa’ debuted at number 21. That was the highest placing for a new release in the entire Top 500.
Wolf Alice had recently been named BRIT Award Group of the Year, adding momentum to their chart performance.
Context and availability
The expanded countdown was described by Radio X management as a landmark listener project. It aimed to map the nation’s musical tastes across more eras and formats.
