An Unforgettable Masters Awaits: A Unique Experience in Recent History
The Masters arrives this year without four of its most magnetic champions. Arnold Palmer won four green jackets. Jack Nicklaus holds six titles. Phil Mickelson has three victories at Augusta. Tiger Woods owns five, his most recent in 2019.
Absences and a rare lineup
For the first time since 1954, none of those four are competing. Only Jack Nicklaus will appear in person. He will hit the ceremonial first shot on Thursday. He will be joined by Tom Watson and Gary Player.
This marks a notable shift in the tournament’s recent history. It also changes the look of an unforgettable Masters weekend.
Membership and club traditions
Palmer and Nicklaus received full, dues-paying membership at Augusta National. They could visit freely and use club facilities without a host. No other former champions received that same offer.
Woods and Mickelson remained honorary members. They still required a host to play the course. The distinction shaped their access and visibility at Augusta.
Historical ties and honors
Palmer and Nicklaus had long links to the club’s founders, Bob Jones and Clifford Roberts. They also had connections with famous members, including Dwight D. Eisenhower and Warren Buffett. Past champions such as Gene Sarazen and Seve Ballesteros figure into that lineage.
Augusta displays plaques celebrating Palmer and Nicklaus. Similar tributes for Woods and Mickelson are possible, but not expected soon.
Streaks, withdrawals and reasons
- Arnold Palmer played 50 consecutive Masters events as a professional.
- Jack Nicklaus appeared in 46 straight tournaments, beginning with three as an amateur.
- Tiger Woods played every Masters from 1995 through 2013, including two starts as an amateur.
- Phil Mickelson played the Masters as an amateur in 1991 and 1993, skipped 1994, then had 27 straight professional starts from 1995 through 2021.
Woods missed multiple tournaments for health and personal reasons. He was absent in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2021. He also missed the most recent edition after Achilles surgery. He is not playing this year following a March 27 DUI arrest near his Jupiter Island home.
Mickelson did not play in 2022 after joining LIV Golf. He returned in 2023 and finished tied for second. He will not compete this year while his family manages a health matter.
Incidents and club responses
The club has publicly rebuked even its greatest stars. In 2010, then-chairman Billy Payne criticized Woods at a State-of-the-Masters press conference. Woods finished tied for fourth that week.
Woods also received a two-shot penalty in 2013 after an incorrect drop on the 15th hole. That event resulted in another tied-for-fourth finish.
When Mickelson left for LIV Golf, the club said it did not formally disinvite him. Later statements emphasized support as he stepped away for personal reasons.
What this means for Augusta
Augusta National is entering a new chapter. The absence of these enduring figures changes the field and the atmosphere. Yet the tournament remains an unforgettable Masters occasion and a unique experience for players and fans.
The long view of the game is shifting. The next decades at Augusta will likely look different from the previous 70 years.
