Giants Trade Luis Matos to Brewers, Acquire Dylan Smith from Tigers
The San Francisco Giants have moved on from outfielder Luis Matos. The club traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash considerations.
Player profile and prospect pedigree
Matos was once a top-100 prospect in Baseball America. He earned that status after a polished approach and very low strikeout rates. At 19, he challenged older competition at Low-A San Jose.
Why the Giants made the move
The organization concluded Matos had “aged out” despite turning 24 in January. He had not developed the physical tools to convert contact into consistently hard contact.
He was out of minor-league options. Other players on the roster provided complementary skills. Jerar Encarnacion supplied more power. Jared Oliva offered more speed and defense. Faced with roster constraints, the Giants designated Matos for assignment. To preserve waiver priority, they chose a cash deal.

Statistical snapshot and career highlights
Matos hit .291 across six seasons in the minors. In parts of three major-league seasons, he posted a .231/.281/.369 line with 15 home runs in 593 plate appearances.
He produced a notable stretch in May 2024. He won NL Player of the Week honors. Over two games he drove in 11 runs, tying modern franchise marks set by Bill Terry (1932) and Jack Clark (1982). That performance was the most RBIs in consecutive games by a player 22 or younger since Johnny Bench in 1970.

Fit with the Brewers
Milwaukee’s lineup emphasizes contact and low strikeout rates. The Brewers posted the best record in the National League last season. Their approach may amplify Matos’ strengths at the plate.
Additional roster moves
The Giants made two other transactions ahead of a series opener in San Diego. They acquired right-handed reliever Dylan Smith from Detroit for cash. To make room, San Francisco designated infielder Tyler Fitzgerald for assignment.
Acquire Dylan Smith from Tigers gave the Giants a 40-man roster addition. Smith is 25 years old and logged a 1.38 ERA in 13 major-league innings last season. He also struck out 57 batters across 39 2/3 innings at four minor-league levels. Detroit had previously designated him for assignment before Opening Day.
