Dan Levy Discusses Learning from ‘Big Mistakes’ on ‘Schitt’s Creek’

Dan Levy has been filming his new sitcom Big Mistakes on the streets of New Jersey. The series was co-created with Rachel Sennott for Netflix.

Premise and casting

The show follows a New Jersey pastor and his sister. They are unexpectedly entangled with organized crime.

Levy has described the idea as rooted in a fear of being trapped. He said he values personal freedom.

Taylor Ortega plays the sister. Laurie Metcalf portrays their mother, a casting choice Levy called his biggest win.

Approach and influences

Dan Levy discusses learning from ‘Big Mistakes’ on ‘Schitt’s Creek’.

He says he avoided letting comparisons dictate the new show. Levy treats Schitt’s Creek as a celebrated high point.

Schitt’s Creek background

Schitt’s Creek was co-created by Levy and featured him as star and co-writer. The show concluded after six seasons.

Its final season swept the major comedy categories at the Emmy Awards. The series marked Levy’s first television writing effort.

Levy spent eight years with MTV Canada in Toronto. He credits that time with teaching him producing, editing, and on-camera skills.

Development and title

Levy began developing Schitt’s Creek with his father, Eugene Levy. Actor Martin Mull helped come up with the show’s name.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation later acquired the series. It centered on Johnny Rose and his family, who lose their fortune.

Goodwood, Catherine O’Hara and legacy

The fictional Schitt’s Creek town was filmed in Goodwood, Ontario. The village has about 689 residents.

Locations from the series now feature local crafts and souvenirs at the Goodwood Mercantile. The community also kept a condolence book.

Actress Catherine O’Hara, who played Moira Rose, died suddenly in January. Her death ended any active talk of a sequel, Levy said.

Levy described returning to the town as emotional. He praised O’Hara’s work and cherished memories from their time together.
