Woo Leads Mariners’ 3-1 Victory Over Angels in 10 Innings

The Seattle Mariners edged the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 in 10 innings on Friday night in Anaheim. Cole Young delivered a clutch triple in the top of the 10th to put Seattle ahead. Josh Naylor added insurance runs later in the frame.

Late rally decides home opener

Young turned on a 1-0 sinker from Brent Suter and ripped a line drive into the right-field corner. The ball caromed past Jo Adell and nearly cleared the fence. Luke Raley scored the go-ahead run on the play.

After an intentional walk to Julio Rodríguez and a wild pitch, Naylor lined a two-run single to right. The hit produced the final margin in the Mariners’ 3-1 victory. Seattle improved to 4-4 on the season, while the Angels fell to 3-5.

Strong pitching performance

Bryan Woo turned in seven scoreless innings, throwing 84 pitches. He struck out six, walked one and permitted one hit.

Relievers Matt Brash, Andrés Muñoz and Gabe Speier combined to limit the Angels to a single hit. It marked the first time in team history Seattle held an opponent to one or fewer hits in an extra-innings game.

Muñoz (1-1) tossed a scoreless ninth and was credited with the win. Speier worked the 10th and recorded his second career save.

Opposing starter

Angels starter Reid Detmers lasted 6 2/3 innings. He struck out four, surrendered three hits and issued four walks.

Player notes and stats

The triple extended Cole Young’s hitting streak to a career-high seven games. The 22-year-old now sports a .310 average and an .885 OPS. He has one homer and five RBIs across eight games this season.

Young is 5-for-12 versus left-handed pitching this year. Naylor’s two-run knock was only his third hit of the season. He entered the at-bat 2-for-31.
