“Starring in Oliver! at Nine Sparked My West End Journey”
Jamie Tyler says a childhood stage role set the course for his career. He first appeared in Oliver! at nine in a 1989 Irthlingborough Entertainment Society production.
Now 45, he is back in the show at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End. He describes the return as a homecoming.
Early roots in Northamptonshire theatre
Tyler grew up in Rushden, Northamptonshire. His early performances included talent shows and local reviews.
His first full-scale show was Oliver! with the Irthlingborough company. He later performed at Sharnbrook Mill Theatre and at the Royal & Derngate.
Stage credits and professional growth
He built a varied resume across musicals and plays. His West End credits include Grease, Evita and Spamalot.
- Jesus Christ Superstar
- Much Ado About Nothing
- Love’s Labour’s Lost
- Consider Yourself… (as a Londoner)
Tyler also toured with South Pacific, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Tommy. He spent time working on a cruise ship after sixth form.
Training path and unexpected opportunities
He had planned to attend drama school but lacked funds. Cruise work provided performance chances instead.
While in Grease in the West End, colleagues told him formal training might no longer be essential. He was already finding steady work.
Stepping away, then returning
Tyler paused full-time theatre to focus on family and financial stability. He wanted a secure home and a reliable income.
He later auditioned for the current Oliver! production. Casting placed him as a swing performer covering several roles.
Life as a swing
As a swing he must attend every performance. He has learned parts for about five characters and can be called on at short notice.
Swings typically work in teams of four to five. Dance captains and colleagues help with choreography and quick turnarounds.
Why Oliver! still matters
Starring in Oliver! at age nine sparked the journey that led him back to the West End. The score remains deeply familiar to him.
He says the Olivers’ rendition of Where Is Love? gives him goosebumps. The songs, he adds, stay with performers for life.
Filmogaz.com will continue to follow his West End journey. The actor now lives in Olney, near Milton Keynes.
