Dense Fog Advisory Issued for Southeast Alabama: Visibility Down to Quarter Mile

The National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory Sunday at 4:08 a.m. for parts of southeast Alabama. The advisory remained in effect until 9 a.m., with visibility expected at a quarter-mile or less.

The weather service warned that low visibility could create hazardous driving conditions. Motorists were urged to slow down and allow extra following distance.

Advisory area and timing

The advisory covered Coffee, Dale, Henry, Geneva and Houston counties. It began at 4:08 a.m. and continued through 9 a.m.

Driver safety guidance

  • Reduce speed. Allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.
  • Use low-beam headlights. Low beams and fog lights improve vehicle visibility to others.
  • Avoid high beams. High beams cause glare and reduce visibility in fog.
  • Increase following distance. Leave ample space for sudden stops or changes in traffic.
  • Use lane markings. Rely on painted lines to stay in your lane when visibility is poor.
  • Consider delaying travel. If possible, wait until conditions improve and visibility increases.

If visibility falls to near zero

Turn on your hazard lights and find a safe place to stop. A nearby parking lot or business area is preferred.

If no parking lot exists, pull well off the roadway and stop. Turn off all lights except your hazard flashers, engage the emergency brake, and remove your foot from the brake pedal so tail lights do not remain illuminated.
