Taoiseach Ensures Fuel Security Until April Amid Hauliers’ ‘National Emergency’
Irish Defence Minister Helen McEntee warned this week that peacekeepers in southern Lebanon face unacceptable risk. Her comments followed the deaths of three Indonesian UNIFIL personnel during two recent attacks.
Deaths and incidents
UNIFIL reported two separate episodes in southern Lebanon that killed three peacekeepers over 48 hours. An explosion near Bani Hayyan destroyed a vehicle and killed two personnel, while others were wounded.
In a separate event at Adchit Al Qusayr, a projectile struck a UN position and killed another peacekeeper. Camp Shamrock is about 20 km from the Bani Hayyan blast and roughly 25 km from Adchit Al Qusayr.
Irish government response
McEntee joined a video call convened by French defence minister Catherine Vautrin with other European troop contributors. She said attacks on UNIFIL personnel violate international law and require full accountability.
The minister confirmed Irish personnel in Lebanon were safe and fully accounted for. She said Ireland is engaged in contingency planning to protect its forces in a volatile environment.
Military reassurance
Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy sought to reassure families of deployed personnel. He stated commanders maintain continuous, 24-hour communications with the Irish battalion overseas.
Mulcahy said any developments affecting troop safety are monitored in real time. Appropriate actions are taken as required to mitigate risk.
International context
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described attacks on peacekeepers as grave violations of humanitarian law. He warned such actions may amount to war crimes and stressed the need for accountability.
UNIFIL monitors the demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon. The area has become a focal point for clashes between Israeli forces and Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters.
Escalation and regional dynamics
The recent violence builds on a wider escalation that intensified in March. In that month, Israel launched a ground invasion of Lebanon while targeting Hezbollah.
Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in solidarity with Tehran after strikes hit Iran that involved Israel and the United States. Those actions prompted a renewed Israeli ground and air offensive.
Coordination and next steps
European defence ministers discussed measures to strengthen coordination and support for troop contributing countries. McEntee said the goal is to ensure peacekeepers are properly protected to carry out their UN mandate.
Ireland reiterated its commitment to UN peacekeeping and to supporting stability in Lebanon. Domestic priorities continue alongside overseas commitments.
