Reform UK Housing Spokesman’s Grenfell Comments Spark Outrage
Reform UK is under pressure to dismiss its housing spokesman after recent remarks about the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Simon Dudley said the fire was a “tragedy” but added: “Everyone dies in the end.” His remarks have sparked outrage across politics and among bereaved families.
Comments and background
Dudley is a former Homes England executive. He was appointed Reform UK’s housing spokesman last month.
The party said he would lead an urgent review of Britain’s building crisis. In an interview published on Wednesday, Dudley criticised the current regulatory regime.
Grenfell inquiry and safety measures
The 2017 Grenfell Tower fire killed 72 people. The public inquiry found those deaths were avoidable.
It blamed decades of government and industry failures over flammable cladding on high-rise buildings. A Building Safety Regulator was created after the blaze to oversee design, construction and occupation of higher-risk buildings.
The regulator has faced criticism for slow approval processes. In June last year the government announced reforms to speed new high-rise housing, including a fast-track process and extra investment.
Family and political reactions
The Grenfell Next of Kin group demanded an apology. They said the deaths were gross negligent manslaughter, not fate.
Senior politicians called for Dudley to go. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the comments shameful, while Housing Secretary Steve Reed said they were beyond the pale.
Green Party MP Sian Berry and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also condemned the remarks. Both described the words as deeply insensitive and demanded Dudley’s dismissal.
Party response
A Reform UK spokesman said homes must be built safely. He warned that excessive regulation can slow housebuilding and cause targets to be missed.
The spokesman added that Dudley’s remarks reflected concerns the regulatory pendulum has swung too far. He said there must be a balance between safety and avoiding unnecessary red tape.
Dudley will lead the promised review into planning, housing delivery and national infrastructure. Filmogaz.com will follow further developments.
