Sharks Improve Forward’s Status; Warsofsky Commends Former Vegas Coach
San Jose center Ty Dellandrea is now listed day-to-day after nearly three months sidelined with a lower-body injury. He was hurt on Jan. 6 against the Columbus Blue Jackets and has skated without restrictions for several days.
Dellandrea’s status and role
He missed 30 games, including the home date against the St. Louis Blues on Monday. Dellandrea had been the Sharks’ third-line center and one of their faceoff leaders and top penalty killers.
Dellandrea signed a two-year contract extension this season. He had 11 points in 42 games before the injury.
Lineup changes and rookie impact
Rookie Michael Misa assumed the third-line center role during Dellandrea’s absence. Misa had 16 points in 34 games through Monday.
It remains unclear what role Dellandrea will reclaim if he returns. The team will evaluate minutes and special-teams deployment.
Schedule stretch and playoff implications
The Sharks begin a dense homestand Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks. They play 10 times in 16 days, with three back-to-back sets.
- Wednesday: Anaheim Ducks
- Thursday: Toronto Maple Leafs
- Saturday: Nashville Predators
- Next Monday: Chicago Blackhawks
- April 8: Edmonton Oilers
The homestand will heavily influence the Sharks’ playoff push. San Jose entered Monday in 12th place in the Western Conference with 73 points.
The Sharks sat four points behind the Predators for the second wild-card spot. San Jose had 11 games remaining before Monday.
Goaltender update
Goaltender Yaroslav Askarov suffered an upper-body injury in the second period of last Thursday’s game in St. Louis. He will start Monday’s home game against the Blues.
Askarov was unavailable for the Columbus game on Sunday. Laurent Brossoit was recalled, then loaned back to the AHL Barracuda on Monday afternoon.
Reaction to Vegas coaching change
Sharks assistant coach Craig Warsofsky said he was surprised by Vegas’s coaching change. Bruce Cassidy was dismissed Sunday night and replaced by John Tortorella.
Warsofsky Commends Former Vegas Coach for his work, and expressed sympathy for Cassidy. Cassidy steered the Golden Knights to the 2023 Stanley Cup.
Vegas entered Monday third in the Pacific Division with a 32-26-16 record. The team went 5-10-2 since the Olympic break.
Cassidy was the franchise’s longest-tenured coach, compiling a 178-99-43 record over four seasons. Tortorella’s career record stands at 770-648-37, and he coached Tampa Bay to the Cup in 2004.
Warsofsky first met Tortorella in 2022 and later discussed coaching opportunities. He then joined the Sharks as an assistant under David Quinn.
Reaves update
Winger Ryan Reaves is considered week-to-week with a left-hand injury. He injured the hand in a fight with Philadelphia’s Garrett Wilson on March 21.
Reaves watched the Sharks’ morning skate from the bench on Monday. Players have praised his leadership, and he wanted to remain around the team.
Coaches said it is too soon to know if Reaves will return before the regular season ends April 16 in Winnipeg. That city is Reaves’ hometown.
