Update Your Embarrassing Gmail Address with Google’s New Feature
Google now allows many U.S. account holders to change the Gmail username that appears before @gmail.com. The company announced the wider rollout on March 31, after beginning tests last year.
How to change your Gmail address
If you want to update your embarrassing Gmail address, Google’s new feature gives a clear process. Follow these steps on a computer or phone.
- Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email.
- Open the “Personal info” tab, then select “Email.”
- Click “Google Account email” and choose “Change Google Account email.”
- Enter a new username that is not in use or previously deleted.
- Choose “Change email” and confirm by selecting “Yes, change email.”
Who can change their username
All Google Account users in the United States now have the option, Google said. Some accounts may not show the change option.
Accounts with certain settings or histories might be ineligible. The Help Center explains those limits.
What happens after you change it
Your old address becomes an alternate email. Messages sent to either address will arrive in the same inbox.
You can sign into Google services with the new or previous address. This includes Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Play, and Google Drive.
Limits and rules to know
The new username must not already belong to another Google Account. It also cannot be an address that was deleted in the past.
After changing, you cannot create another new gmail.com address for 12 months. You also cannot delete the new gmail.com address during that period.
Data, backups and precautions
Your Google data stays intact after the change. Photos, saved messages, and past emails remain available.
Google advises checking a few things first. Review Chromebook sign-in, sites that use “Sign in with Google,” and any Chrome Remote Desktop connections. Back up important data before you switch addresses.
Reverting and account access
You may return to your previous Gmail address at any time. You can keep both the old and new addresses linked to the same account.
