Warriors Face Tough Decision on Pat Spencer Soon
The Golden State Warriors must start planning for the offseason as the regular season winds down. Stephen Curry could be sidelined through the Play-In Tournament, increasing urgency to assemble a championship-caliber roster.
Injuries have opened opportunities for depth players. Gui Santos has shown major offensive progress and received a three-year, $15 extension. Pat Spencer has also taken positive steps, but his production has been uneven.
Pat Spencer’s recent numbers
Spencer logged just six games in 2023-24 before forcing his way into the rotation over the past two seasons. Since March 1, he has averaged nine points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
He is shooting 32.6 percent from three-point range in that stretch. He has played roughly 20 minutes per game during that span.
Over the past month, Spencer produced five double-digit scoring games. He also had four outings with six points or fewer. He was ejected in Game 5 of the Warriors’ first-round series against the Houston Rockets last season.
Contract status and timeline
Spencer converted from a two-way to a standard NBA contract on Feb. 9. That marked back-to-back seasons where his two-way play led to a guaranteed deal for the remainder of the campaign.
Golden State did not extend those guarantees beyond each season. Last offseason the team allowed him to reach unrestricted free agency before bringing him back. He will approach restricted free agency again this offseason.
Offseason stakes
With Curry and Jimmy Butler both listed as having one season remaining on their contracts, roster spots carry added weight. The Warriors need reliable availability and consistency heading into 2026-27.
The organization must choose whether to keep Spencer in uncertain contract limbo or to commit to a longer-term role. The club’s choices will shape the rotation and its championship chances.
