Lamar Odom Celebrates Nearly 60 Days of Sobriety Milestone
Lamar Odom is marking a sobriety milestone as he approaches nearly 60 days sober. He spoke about recovery during a virtual interview tied to a new documentary. USA TODAY conducted the interview on March 24.
Documentary and recent events
Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom premieres on Netflix on March 31. The episode examines his life at 46, both on and off the court.
It covers his Oct. 13, 2015 collapse at the Love Ranch, about 80 miles from Las Vegas. The brothel has since been demolished.
Odom spent close to three months receiving care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The film also touches on his divorce from Khloé Kardashian.
Health journey and recovery
After the coma, doctors warned his family he might never walk or speak again. He survived 12 strokes and six heart attacks while unconscious.
Medical teams later described his survival as a medical miracle. He is 6’10 and a two-time NBA champion.
In February, Odom completed a 30-day program at iRely Recovery in Los Angeles. He said stopping marijuana proved particularly difficult.
He reports no alcohol or cannabis use since Jan. 28. Odom is approaching nearly 60 days of sobriety, a personal milestone he highlighted.
Legal matters
Odom was arrested in Las Vegas on Jan. 17, 2026 on suspicion of driving under the influence. Clark County court records list misdemeanor counts including DUI and improper lane change.
Those documents allege he drove more than 41 miles per hour over the posted limit. He has pleaded not guilty and a bench trial is scheduled for July 7.
Family losses and outlook
The film revisits several heartbreaking losses. His infant son Jayden died in 2006 from sudden infant death syndrome.
His mother, Cathy Mercer, died of colon cancer in 1992 when he was 12. Odom says those events shaped his life and struggles with addiction.
He hopes his experience will give faith and hope to others facing substance use disorders. He told interviewers he wants to live his best life and uplift those around him.
