ATP Marrakech Day 1 Predictions: Jesper de Jong Faces Yannick Hanfmann
The clay swing begins this week at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech. It is the only ATP tournament staged in Africa.
Tournament setting
Play takes place on Moroccan red clay. The surface rewards patience and consistent baseline play more than raw power. That profile suits European grinders and many South American clay specialists.
Defending champion Luciano Darderi heads the draw. His recent form in Santiago included a win over Yannick Hanfmann in the final weeks before Marrakech.
Day one focus
Opening day includes three first-round matches that deserve attention. These matches mix local wild cards with established tour professionals.
As part of our ATP Marrakech Day 1 predictions, we break down the matchups below.
Aleksandar Vukic vs Taha Baadi
This is their first tour-level meeting. Baadi received a Moroccan wild card and will have strong home support.
Vukic has struggled on clay recently, posting a 4-8 ATP clay record over the last 18 months. Despite that, his ranking and experience are significantly higher. He serves better in pressure moments and closes out leads more reliably. Prediction: Vukic in 2.
Karim Bennani vs Quentin Halys
Bennani is another local wild card. The 19-year-old is making only his second ATP main-draw appearance.
Halys arrives having won nine of 15 matches so far in 2026. His game is built around a big serve and an aggressive, first-strike style. Those traits have produced most of his results on faster courts, but they can still trouble a less experienced opponent. Prediction: Halys in 2.
Jesper de Jong vs Yannick Hanfmann
This pairing is also a first meeting. Hanfmann brings clear momentum to Marrakech after a deep run in Santiago.
The German uses a heavy serve and a penetrating forehand to finish points early. De Jong has shown glimpses on clay, including a Challenger semi-final in Murcia, but his 2026 record stands at five wins from 14 matches. Hanfmann’s recent form and serving numbers give him the edge. Prediction: Hanfmann in 2.
