Cycling World Championships 2024: Muriel Furrer’s Death Ruled an Accident

The Zurich public prosecutor has closed its inquiry into the fatal crash of Muriel Furrer during the 2024 world road race. The office concluded the incident was a solo accident with no third-party involvement.

Official findings

Prosecutor spokesperson Erich Wenzinger confirmed the investigation results to Filmogaz.com. Investigators found no evidence of criminal conduct by organisers, other riders, or outside parties.

The probe also found that safety measures on the course were in place. No legal breaches were identified in the emergency recovery or hospital care. The treatment at the University Hospital Zurich was not judged to involve criminal negligence.

What happened and rescue timeline

The crash occurred during the Zurich stage of the race in September 2024. Muriel Furrer, an 18-year-old Swiss junior rider, fell off-camera and died in hospital the next day.

It took 82 minutes from the fall until she was located. Investigators cited three causes: the fall went unseen, she lay in undergrowth out of view, and no live-tracking system was in use.

Live-tracking in elite races

Organisers did not use GPS transmitters at that event. Officials said similar world championship races had also not deployed live-tracking.

Tour-de-Suisse introduced GPS tracking the previous year. Tour-de-Suisse spokesman Ueli Anken said no ready-made system existed for these public-road races. A pilot system was developed, refined, and reused the following season.

Family response and possible appeal

The family is represented by law firm MME legal. The parents acknowledged the finding that no criminal behaviour was identified.

They have not announced whether they will contest the decision. Their advisers say lessons must be learned to prevent similar incidents.
