Kimi Antonelli Seizes Suzuka Victory, Overtakes Russell in World Championship Lead
Kimi Antonelli emerged victorious at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. The Mercedes driver moved into the lead of the drivers’ standings for the first time in his career. He now sits nine points ahead of team-mate George Russell.
Kimi Antonelli Seizes Suzuka Victory, Overtakes Russell in World Championship Lead was the banner for the weekend. Antonelli recovered from a poor start and used a pivotal safety car to take control. His race pace after the restart made the win decisive.
How the race turned
Antonelli began from pole but fell back to sixth on the opening lap. Oscar Piastri took the early lead while George Russell also lost ground. The race featured a single round of pit stops before a major incident changed the order.
Oliver Bearman suffered a heavy crash that brought out the safety car. The timing allowed Antonelli to complete a faster stop than those ahead. He rejoined in front at the restart and never looked back.
Driver and team reactions
Antonelli said he felt good after the result and called the safety-car moment fortunate. He admitted his initial start was poor but praised the car balance in the second stint. Russell voiced clear frustration over the team radio after his setback.
Race finish and key results
Antonelli finished more than 13 seconds clear of Oscar Piastri. Charles Leclerc claimed third while Russell ended up fourth. Lando Norris passed Lewis Hamilton late to take fifth place.
Pierre Gasly held off Max Verstappen to secure seventh. Liam Lawson climbed from 14th to ninth thanks to the safety car. Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten and took the final championship point.
