Nintendo Confirms Fox McCloud’s Role in Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo confirms that Fox McCloud will appear in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie. The company released a new poster showing Fox beside his Arwing starship.

The reveal arrives less than a week before the film opens. The feature is an animated follow-up to the first Super Mario movie. The sequel reaches theaters on April 1.

How Fox appears in the film

Fox stands alongside Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser in the poster. Fans had earlier spotted a possible Star Fox silhouette in promotional art.

Star Fox is usually separate from the Mushroom Kingdom canon. Outside of crossovers, Fox mainly meets Mario in Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo’s stance on crossovers

Shigeru Miyamoto has long warned against mixing major Nintendo franchises. He has called it an unwritten rule at the company.

Miyamoto made an exception for Pikmin, which are confirmed to appear in the film. That precedent may explain other unexpected cameos.

Star Fox franchise context

The Star Fox series has seen limited activity in recent years. The last new mainline game was 2016’s Star Fox Zero.

Star Fox Zero was a Wii U exclusive. Nintendo developed it with PlatinumGames, and it drew mixed reviews. It has not been ported to Nintendo Switch.

In 2017, the completed SNES title Star Fox 2 became publicly available. It arrived as part of the SNES Classic Edition microconsole.

Cast and credits

  • Brie Larson voices Rosalina.
  • Donald Glover is listed as Luigi in new credits.
  • Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr.
  • Returning cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson.

The inclusion of Fox McCloud raises questions about a new Star Fox game. Fans will likely watch the film for hints and answers.
