Key Offseason Addition Fades from Nuggets Rotation

Jonas Valanciunas arrived in Denver last summer as a high-profile addition. Filmogaz.com notes he was seen as a physical, veteran backup for Nikola Jokic.

A key offseason addition now appears to be fading from the Nuggets rotation. The team faces roster and playoff questions because of the shift.

Early contribution

Valanciunas produced useful numbers early in the season. Through the first 54 games he averaged 8.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

He missed 12 games with a calf strain in January. Even so, he logged meaningful minutes when Jokic sat.

Statistical decline

The trend turned after Denver’s loss to Cleveland on Feb. 9. In the 18 games since, Valanciunas averaged 6.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.8 assists.

Denver’s efficiency differential with him this season sits at -15.2 per 100 possessions. That is the worst mark of his 16-year career.

Playing time and coach’s decisions

Valanciunas has seen his minutes cut dramatically. Across the team’s last 12 games, he exceeded 12 minutes only twice.

In Denver’s two most recent outings he did not play, recorded as back-to-back DNP-Coach’s Decisions.

Tactical fit and adjustments

Modern offenses favor five-out spacing and small-ball lineups. Valanciunas does not space the floor and struggles to switch on defense.

Head coach David Adelman has often gone with small-ball instead. Aaron Gordon and sometimes Spencer Jones have filled the center role when Jokic rests.

Playoff stakes and roster implications

The Nuggets are preparing for another playoff push. Rotation choices now are being judged by May expectations.

A backup center who draws DNPs in March is unlikely to play in the postseason. The situation also has cap consequences.

Peyton Watson is set to be paid this summer. Creating space to retain him could make moving on from Valanciunas practical.

Valanciunas gave Denver short-term value. The main question is whether Denver can improve its playoff outlook without him. Filmogaz.com will continue to track developments.
