Unified Fire Triggers Evacuations, Shuts Roads Near Belen

A fast-moving wildfire south of Belen has consumed roughly 500 acres and prompted evacuations and road closures. The blaze is burning near Highway 304 and Lagrima Road, and crews are working through the night.

Fire status and command

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday the fire was 0% contained. Flames have crossed both sides of the Rio Grande.

The incident has been classified as a Type 3. New Mexico State Forestry is scheduled to assume command Wednesday morning.

Road closures and evacuations

Highway 304 is closed between Lucero Drive and Barbara Street. First responders may expand restrictions overnight.

Valencia County officials placed Madrone Flyway residents in “GO” evacuation status. Lagrima Road is also under evacuation, according to the county fire chief.
