Braves Add Strider to Injured List Before Season Opener
The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Spencer Strider on the injured list Monday because of a strained oblique. He had been scheduled to start the spring training finale against Pittsburgh before being scratched.
He will miss action ahead of the season opener. The club announced the move as it finalizes its roster.
Injury outlook
Manager Walt Weiss said the team is hopeful Strider will be sidelined only a couple of weeks. The club will monitor him closely in the short term.
Recent history and recovery
Strider is 27 and is two years removed from right elbow surgery. He missed most of 2024 and returned to the majors last year.
Last year he went 7-14 with a 4.45 ERA in 23 starts. In spring training he was 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings.
In 2023, the All-Star led the majors with 20 victories and 281 strikeouts. The club had hoped he would regain that form this season.
Rotation impact
The oblique injury is the latest setback for Atlanta’s pitching depth. Starters Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep are already on the 60-day injured list after elbow surgery.
What comes next
The Braves added Strider to their injured list while evaluating options for the early rotation. Weiss said no firm timetable exists yet for a return.
