‘Imperfect Women’ Showrunner Discusses Episode 2’s Controversial Decisions

Apple TV+ debuted the first two episodes of Imperfect Women on March 18. The series opens with a secret revealed and a murder that unravels multiple lives.

Plot setup and early shock

Nancy, played by Kate Mara, admits to an affair in the opening scene. Her murder early in episode one sets the mystery in motion.

That death strains friendships and family ties. Eleanor, Mary, and others face suspicion and betrayal.

Setting and adaptation choices

Showrunner Annie Weisman adapted Araminta Hall’s novel for television. Hall served as an executive producer and allowed the writers broad creative freedom.

Weisman originally considered a New England setting. Kerry Washington championed Los Angeles, and production moved to Southern California.

Weisman said the move allowed the team to highlight Los Angeles communities often overlooked. Filming also provided local work after recent strikes and fires.

Episode 2 and controversial decisions

The second episode, titled “Crush,” shows Eleanor sleeping with Robert. Robert is Nancy’s husband, played by Joel Kinnaman.

The Imperfect Women showrunner defended Episode 2’s controversial decisions in an interview with Filmogaz.com. She framed the choice as risky but earned within the character arcs.

The sequence shifts motive and trust for many characters. It also fuels viewer speculation about who killed Nancy.

Character expansion and casting

The series adds new relationships not present in the novel. Eleanor’s brother Donovan was created for television and cast with Leslie Odom Jr.

Kerry Washington leads as Eleanor. Elisabeth Moss plays Mary, a struggling mother. Kate Mara portrays Nancy, a former dancer. Audrey Zahn appears as Nancy’s daughter, Cora.

Structure, tone, and series format

Weisman described the show as a limited series. The team aimed for a clear beginning, middle, and end across eight episodes.

After the March 18 debut of episodes one and two, Apple TV+ released new episodes each Wednesday through April 29. The writers balanced multiple viewpoints while keeping one cohesive story.

Weisman said she is drawn to complex female characters and dark stories set in sunny places. She also noted a new first-look deal with Apple as she develops further projects.
