JJ Wetherholt Joins Cardinals’ Opening Day Lineup
The St. Louis Cardinals will open the season with infield prospect JJ Wetherholt on their major-league roster. President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom confirmed the move to reporters, including Jeff Jones of Filmogaz.com.
Roster decisions and context
The club also announced that Thomas Saggese, José Fermín and outfielder Nathan Church will break camp with the team. Nelson Velázquez will be assigned to Triple-A Memphis.
A corresponding roster move will be required to create space on the 40-man roster for Wetherholt. Several winter trades cleared opportunities for younger players.
Why Wetherholt earned the chance
The club long planned to give Wetherholt a major-league opportunity. They moved veterans such as Willson Contreras, Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan to open playing time and payroll flexibility.
The team views Wetherholt as a key evaluation piece. The decision aligns with their rebuilding strategy and need to assess prospects in big-league games.
Performance profile
Wetherholt was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 draft. He split last season between Double-A and Triple-A, making 496 plate appearances.
He posted a combined .306/.421/.510 batting line. He produced a 154 wRC+ and stole 23 bases. His walk rate was 14.5 percent and his strikeout rate was 14.7 percent.
Scouts liked his shortstop defense, and he also saw time at second and third base. As rankings for the 2026 season emerged, he landed in the top 10 of many lists.
Spring performance
In camp, Wetherholt hit two home runs and walked in 20.5 percent of his 44 plate appearances. His spring stat line was .212/.386/.394 with a 115 wRC+.
His batting average on balls in play was an unusually low .200. Still, the team saw enough to keep him on the Opening Day roster.

Roster logistics and incentives
By giving him an Opening Day spot, the Cardinals preserve the Prospect Promotion Incentive. If Wetherholt earns a full service year and posts elite awards results, the club could gain an extra draft pick.
The primary goal remains building a core that can return the team to contention. The Cardinals plan to give Wetherholt regular reps to aid his adjustment.
Velázquez and outfield considerations
Nelson Velázquez’s assignment to Triple-A surprised some observers. The Cardinals had sought a right-handed outfield complement this winter.
Lars Nootbaar and Victor Scott II are both left-handed bats. The team did not add a right-handed regular in free agency, and Velázquez joined camp as a non-roster invitee.
Why Velázquez wasn’t added to the 40-man
Velázquez posted a torrid spring: .357/.449/.667. Despite that, the club elected not to use a 40-man spot on him.
The decision appears tied to roster arithmetic. The team must free a 40-man spot for Wetherholt. Nootbaar will start the season on the 10-day injured list.
Right-hander Hunter Dobbins remains rehabbing a torn ACL. Unless Dobbins moves to the 60-day IL, the Cardinals will need to trade, DFA, or otherwise remove a player to clear room.
Velázquez has no known opt-out. The organization will retain him in the minors without using a roster spot.
