Major upsets on the men’s side
Reigning champion Jakub Mensik was eliminated by Frances Tiafoe. The match finished 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, with the final tiebreak ending 13-11.
Tiafoe saved two match points and elevated his play at decisive moments. Mensik never had his serve broken and still lost despite more aces, winners and total points.
Francisco Cerundolo ousted Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Medvedev, an Indian Wells finalist, managed 55% of points on his first serve.
He also committed 41 unforced errors. Cerundolo now faces Ugo Humbert for a place in the quarter-finals.
Ugo Humbert advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Alexander Shevchenko. Humbert moves into the fourth round to meet either Cerundolo or Medvedev.
Terence Atmane produced a shock over Felix Auger-Aliassime. He won 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and converted two of three break points.
Auger-Aliassime struggled with 30 unforced errors. Atmane could meet Mensik or Tiafoe in the last 16.
Women’s bracket heats up
Coco Gauff survived a tough test against Sorana Cirstea. The fourth seed won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in just over two hours.
Gauff raised her level in the decider. She faced no break points and created six break opportunities on Cirstea’s serve.
Karolina Muchova dominated Alexandra Eala to reach the quarter-finals. Muchova triumphed 6-0, 6-2 in slightly more than an hour.
She converted five of five break points and won 78% of points on serve. Muchova will play the winner of Mirra Andreeva versus Victoria Mboko.
Victoria Mboko defeated Mirra Andreeva 7-6, 4-6, 6-0. The Canadian prevailed in two hours and twenty minutes.
Mboko won three of five break points in the decider and saved two break points on her own serve.
Seed shocks and upcoming marquee ties
Top men’s seed Carlos Alcaraz and top women’s seed Iga Swiatek have both exited the event. The draw remains wide open.
Fans can expect high-profile matches soon. Aryna Sabalenka meets Qinwen Zheng in a repeat of their 2024 Australian Open final.
Amanda Anisimova faces 12th seed Belinda Bencic. Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev are still scheduled for action.
