Historic Rome, Georgia Courthouse Decimated by Massive Flames on Monday
A major fire engulfed the historic Floyd County Courthouse in Rome, Georgia on Monday afternoon. Video from the scene showed heavy smoke and massive flames consuming the roof and upper floors. The structure was largely decimated by the blaze.
Fire and response
Floyd County Government posted on Facebook that everyone had been evacuated safely, county manager Jamie McCord said. Emergency crews remained at the scene as investigators began preliminary work.
Location and disruptions
Roads in the downtown area were blocked to traffic. Police evacuated portions of Broad Street during mid-afternoon operations.
Building status and cause
The courthouse was undergoing renovations when the fire started. Officials have not released a cause for the incident.
