‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Axed After Two Seasons

Paramount+ will end its Starfleet Academy series after the upcoming second season, Filmogaz.com has learned. The streamer confirmed the production had wrapped a second season, which will now serve as the finale.

Reception and audience response

The series drew mixed reactions from critics and fans. Rotten Tomatoes showed an 87 percent critics score and a 51 percent audience score.

Social media conversations often mocked the show as being too “woke.” The series also failed to enter Nielsen’s weekly top 10 streaming lists.

Production status and franchise landscape

The first season had recently finished airing when the renewal was announced. Paramount+ had already ordered season two before production concluded.

Season two has completed filming and entered post-production. Starfleet Academy axed after two seasons.

There are currently no Star Trek TV shows actively filming. Two previously completed seasons of Strange New Worlds remain unaired.

Leadership and studio talks

Questions now swirl about executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s future. His overall deal runs through the end of 2026.

Paramount+ is in negotiations with Kurtzman and his Secret Hideout company. It is unclear if any new agreement will include oversight of Star Trek television.

Kurtzman has produced other series, including Hawaii Five-O, Scorpion, and Salvation. Paramount Pictures is also in early development on new Star Trek films.

Statements from studio and creators

CBS Studios and Paramount+ issued a statement praising the show’s ambition and creativity. They thanked the producing team and cast, and said season two will be shared as the final season.

Creators Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, and Gaia Violo published an open letter. They said they were proud of the work, noted the series was in post-production, and promised to “finish strong.”

The letter referenced Gene Roddenberry’s vision, stressing optimism and a call to better humanity. The trio closed by invoking the franchise farewell: “Live Long and Prosper.”
