Fire Severely Damages Floyd County Historic Courthouse in Rome

A fire broke out on Monday at the Floyd County Historic Courthouse in downtown Rome. Officials discovered the blaze around 2:20 p.m. at the building on West 5th Avenue.

Immediate response

All employees inside were evacuated safely, Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord said. Police blocked roads and cleared portions of nearby Broad Street while crews fought the fire.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Portions of the historic structure suffered severe damage.

Building use and condition

The courthouse serves as the Floyd County Tax Commissioner’s office. The structure was undergoing renovations when the fire started.
