Vgk trade sends Nic Dowd to Vegas as Capitals get Jesper Vikman and picks
The Capitals traded Nic Dowd to vgk on Thursday, ending his eight-season run in Washington and bringing AHL goaltender Jesper Vikman plus two draft picks back to the organization. The move comes with the 3 p. m. trade deadline looming on Friday and narrows Washington’s margin in a tight playoff chase.
Vgk completes deal for longtime Capitals center
Before taking the ice for an optional practice session on Thursday, the Capitals learned Dowd had been dealt to Vegas in exchange for Jesper Vikman, Vegas’ second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft and San Jose’s third-round choice in the 2027 NHL Draft (the latter previously acquired by Vegas). Dowd had been in the middle of his eighth season with Washington and recently passed the 500-games plateau in a Capitals sweater.
What the trade removes and adds for Washington
Dowd signed with the Capitals eight summers ago on a one-year, league-minimum contract of $650, 000 in the wake of Washington’s Stanley Cup win in Vegas. The Huntsville, Ala. native developed into a top shutdown, bottom-six center who killed penalties and handled defensive zone responsibilities. He became the first player not drafted by the Capitals to play eight or more seasons there before being traded since Brooks Laich was moved on Feb. 28, 2016.
Jesper Vikman assigned to Hershey as he recovers
The Capitals assigned Jesper Vikman to the AHL’s Hershey Bears, where he will begin his tenure with the organization while recovering from injury and listed week-to-week. The 23-year-old was a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and moved to North America in 2022, spending one year in juniors with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants before playing in the minors. This season, Vikman split time with the Henderson Silver Knights and other clubs; through 18 games with the Silver Knights he was 8-7-4 with a. 866 save percentage and a 3. 41 goals-against average.
Vikman, listed at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, is described as using his size with good agility and lateral movement and as calm in the crease. With Mitch Gibson currently injured in Hershey, the addition gives the Bears another depth option and creates more room for Clay Stevenson to move toward the NHL roster.
Immediate fallout in Washington
The deal leaves Washington four points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff berth with 19 games remaining on the schedule. Players in the locker room reflected on late-season swings and missed opportunities; Caps forward Hendrix Lapierre said, "One of my first thoughts coming in this morning when I heard the news was what if we won against Utah?" referencing the club’s 3-2 loss to Utah on Tuesday.
By moving a right-handed shutdown center who kills penalties, the Capitals added organizational goaltending depth and two future draft assets while reducing a veteran defensive faceoff option on their current roster.
The next confirmed milestone is the 3 p. m. trade deadline on Friday. Jesper Vikman will begin his assignment with Hershey as he continues to recover, and the Capitals head into the remaining 19 games with a shortened runway to the playoffs.
