Tornadoes Strike Southwest Michigan: 4 Dead, Many Injured
On Friday, a severe weather event left at least four people dead in Southwest Michigan. Suspected tornadoes struck various locations, leading to significant destruction and injuries.
Tornadoes in Union City and Cass County
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that three fatalities occurred in Union City due to a reported tornado. In addition, a dozen individuals sustained injuries, with three requiring hospitalization.
In Cass County, there was another confirmed death linked to tornado activity near Edwardsburg. Sheriff Clint Roach reported multiple injuries in this area as well.
Damage and Further Incidents
Reports also mentioned a tornado causing damage in Three Rivers, particularly impacting structures like a Menards store. However, authorities have yet to provide details on injuries or fatalities resulting from that event.
State Response to Severe Weather
In light of the extensive damage and potential ongoing threats, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC). The activation, which took place at 6 p.m., aims to coordinate resources and response efforts in affected communities.
“By taking this action, we can ensure the state can monitor and respond to local requests,” Whitmer stated in a press release. “I want to thank all the first responders who reacted promptly to keep Michiganders safe.”

The SEOC is tasked with aiding local governments and emergency agencies in their recovery efforts. Personnel are in close communication with local officials and private sector partners to meet resource needs as they arise.
