BYD Launches 1,500 kW Overseas Flash Charging by Late 2026
BYD Group is set to introduce its innovative 1,500 kW “Flash Charging” infrastructure overseas by the conclusion of 2026. This announcement was made by General Manager Li Yunfei and highlights the company’s strategic focus on expanding its charging network globally.
Global Expansion Strategy
BYD’s global initiative follows its successful domestic “Flash Charging China” blueprint. The integrated system uses a “storage + charging” architecture, incorporating energy storage capabilities ranging from 200 to 300 kWh per charging pile. This design aims to reduce pressure on the power grid.
Operational Goals
By the end of 2026, BYD plans to establish a network of 20,000 flash charging stations within China. This extensive network will include:
- 18,000 stations built in collaboration with partners like TELD, ensuring 90% urban coverage within 5 km in major cities.
- 2,000 dedicated highway charging stations.
As of March 5, 2026, BYD has already completed 4,239 stations, including the first 1,000 highway stations expected to go live before May 1, 2026.
Technical Specifications
The new 1,500 kW charging system operates at a voltage of 1,000V. When utilized with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, vehicles such as the Denza Z9GT and Yangwang U7 can transition from 10% to 70% charge in approximately 5 minutes. This advanced battery architecture is optimized for extreme weather conditions.
Official data indicates that the battery can achieve a charge from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes after being exposed to temperatures of −30°C for 24 hours. In moderate temperatures, charging from 10% to 97% is accomplished within 9 minutes.
Market Insights
BYD’s push for high-speed charging infrastructure coincides with a remarkable 41.4% year-on-year surge in overseas vehicle sales in February, totaling 100,151 units. This growth stands in stark contrast to slower sales in the domestic market.
Future Sales Targets and Market Positioning
Looking ahead to 2026, BYD aims to sell 1.3 million vehicles internationally, marking a 24.3% increase from the 1.05 million units exported in 2025. The global rollout of the 1,500 kW charging infrastructure will strategically target key regions, including Europe and ASEAN.
To support this expansion, production facilities in Thailand, Brazil, and Hungary will scale up throughout 2026. BYD’s goal is to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for international buyers, enhancing its competitive positioning in the global market.
