In a striking incident during the inaugural round of the 2026 Formula 3 season, the clash between Louis Sharp and James Wharton turned dramatic. Their collision not only ended their races but also showcased the intense rivalry on the track.
Race Highlights
The race began with optimism as Louis Sharp, starting from thirteenth, showcased impressive skills. By the close of the first lap, he advanced to ninth place after overtaking Freddie Slater. Shortly after, he secured eighth position, closely trailing his teammate Wharton and Alpine’s Nico Lacorte.
However, a delay in activating the Drag Reduction System (DRS) due to technical issues hindered their overtaking attempts, creating tension on the track.
Collision Details
As the race progressed to lap eight, Sharp aimed for an overtaking maneuver on Wharton. He first attempted to pass on the outside at turn three, followed by a switchback move at turn four. Wharton, though, defended staunchly, pushing Sharp wide toward turn five.
The close quarter racing led to a tangling of cars at turn six, culminating in a significant crash into the barriers. The force of the collision prompted the deployment of a safety car, eventually leading to a red flag situation. Notably, both drivers reported no injuries following the incident, though Sharp voiced his frustration over the team radio regarding the event.
Race Outcome
The severity of the crash forced both drivers to retire from the race. As the race did not resume, points were only awarded to the top five finishers, given that over 25% of the race distance had been completed.
