Hyundai Invests $6.3 Billion in AI Data Center and Robot Factory

Hyundai Motor Group is making significant strides in South Korea’s tech and manufacturing sectors. On February 27, 2023, a partnership agreement was signed to invest approximately 9 trillion won, or $6.3 billion, in various high-tech facilities.

Investment Overview

The investment will focus on several key areas:

  • AI Data Center: Hyundai plans to allocate around 5.8 trillion won to construct a cutting-edge AI data center. This facility will feature 50,000 graphics processing units (GPUs).
  • Robot Manufacturing: An investment of 400 billion won will be directed towards building a factory dedicated to producing various types of robots, including wearable technology.
  • Hydrogen Production: Hyundai will invest 1 trillion won in establishing hydrogen production facilities.
  • Solar Generation: Additionally, 1.3 trillion won will be directed towards solar energy generation projects.

Location of Developments

These developments will take place in the Saemangeum area, located on South Korea’s western coast. This location is part of a large national land reclamation initiative that began over two decades ago. The goal of this project is to enhance farmland availability and stimulate industrial growth in regions previously considered less developed.

Regional Political Context

The investment site lies within the Jeolla provinces, historically known as a stronghold for South Korea’s political liberals. This includes the Democratic Party led by President Lee Jae Myung.

Through these strategic investments, Hyundai Motor Group aims to bolster its technological capabilities and contribute to the economic development of South Korea’s western coastal region.
