The Provincial Football Championship brings compelling matchups. Expect exciting weekend action as counties test form and depth ahead of later rounds.
Saturday fixtures
Derry v Antrim
Date: Saturday, April 18. Venue: Find Insurance Celtic Park. Kick-off: 5pm. Broadcaster: BBC.
Derry have made three changes to their starting line-up. Eoin McEvoy will start his first game of the season. Conor McCluskey returns to the starting XV for the first time since the February win over Tyrone. Conor Doherty is back after missing the Cavan match.
Antrim showed improvement during their Division Four campaign. They remain clear underdogs against a Derry side with stronger scoring options. Derry are expected to control the contest as the game progresses.
Sunday Leinster quarter-finals
Kildare v Laois
Date: Sunday, April 19. Venue: Cedral St Conleth’s Park. Kick-off: 3.45pm.
Laois opened their championship with a nine-point victory over Offaly last weekend. Kildare arrive with recent struggles after relegation from Division Two. Key Kildare scorers include Ben Loakman, Darragh Kirwan, and Brian McLoughlin. Home advantage may prove decisive.
Dublin v Wicklow
Date: Sunday, April 19. Venue: Echelon Park Aughrim. Kick-off: 3pm.
Wicklow began their championship campaign strongly by defeating Carlow. Dublin represent a marked step up in quality despite a transitional period. Ger Brennan’s side named a potent forward line including Con O’Callaghan, Paddy Small, Sean Bugler, and Niall Scully.
If Wicklow feed Padraig O’Toole and Oisin McGraynor effectively, they can pressure Dublin’s defence. An upset would still be considered unlikely.
Louth v Wexford
Date: Sunday, April 19. Venue: Netwatch Cullen Park. Kick-off: 2.30pm.
Defending champions Louth head into this tie as favourites. Wexford bring momentum after consecutive league promotions and a narrow Division Three final defeat to Down. Louth possess a strong bench with impact players like Ryan Burns, Craig Lennon, Tommy Durnin, and Ciaran Downey.
Meath v Westmeath
Date: Sunday, April 19. Venue: Glenisk O’Connor Park. Kick-off: 2pm.
Meath have selected the same XV that defeated Cork in the Division Two Final. That performance makes them clear favourites. Westmeath impressed earlier by beating Longford 5-25 to 1-16 and boast clinical finishers including Luke Loughlin, Brandon Kelly, Shane Corcoran, and Ray Connellan.
Meath may hold an advantage in the middle third. Jack Flynn, Cian McBride, and Bryan Menton provide strong ball-winning ability. If Meath control possession, forwards Jordan Morris, Eoghan Frayne, and Ruairí Kinsella can capitalise.
Ulster quarter-final
Monaghan v Cavan
Date: Sunday, April 19. Venue: St Tiernach’s Park, Clones. Kick-off: 3pm. Broadcaster: BBC.
Monaghan enter this tie after a difficult Division One league campaign. They lost seven games and averaged defeats by about ten points. The side finished with a stronger performance, scoring 3-15 against Donegal in the final league fixture.
Cavan narrowly avoided relegation to Division Three during the league. The upcoming match looks tight on paper. Monaghan, however, appear to possess more attacking firepower through Mícheál Bannigan, Stephen O’Hanlon, and David Garland.
