Nensi Patel Makes History as New Zealand’s First Indian-Born Woman Cricketer
Nensi Patel has made history by becoming New Zealand’s first Indian-born woman cricketer. This milestone occurred during the opening match of the white-ball series against Zimbabwe at Seddon Park on February 26, 2023.
Nensi Patel’s Historic Debut
At just 23 years old, Patel received her ceremonial cap from teammate Brooke Halliday before her international debut. Although Patel was centrally contracted for the 2022–23 season, she had not played for the national team prior to this match.
Patel had an impressive summer with the Northern Brave, finishing as the top run-scorer in the Super Smash and ranking second in wickets taken. During her T20 debut, she bowled four overs, conceding only 20 runs, and contributing to New Zealand’s 92-run victory over Zimbabwe.
Reflections on the Match
Despite not getting a chance to bat, Patel reflected on the match experience. “Going into the second over, I felt much more comfortable,” she said, acknowledging her initial nervousness.
After the match, Patel realized the significance of her achievement, expressing pride for her family both in attendance and back in India. “It means a lot to have my family’s support and to make them proud,” she stated. “It shows the younger generation that hard work can take you to the highest level.”
Continued Success for the White Ferns
The White Ferns showcased their strength in the second T20I in Hamilton, bowling out Zimbabwe for just 86 runs to secure a 110-run victory. Early wickets from Jess Kerr and Bree Illing set a solid foundation, with Patel and fellow teammate Kayley Knight each claiming two wickets.
Patel finished with impressive figures of 2 for 11 in four overs. New Zealand’s captain, Melie Kerr, marked her first assignment as permanent captain by introducing fresh talent into the squad, following the retirement of Sophie Devine from 50-over cricket and injuries to key players.
Upcoming Matches and Goals
Both Patel and Knight aim to provide valuable international experience as the team prepares for the T20 World Cup in England this June. The White Ferns are looking to complete a clean sweep against Zimbabwe, with another T20I scheduled at Seddon Park, followed by three ODIs.
