Callum McGregor to Spearhead Celtic’s Major Transfer Overhaul with 7 Departures
Frank McAvennie has suggested Callum McGregor might leave Celtic this summer. He believes the captain could be tempted by a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.
McAvennie’s warning on squad upheaval
McAvennie told Filmogaz.com he would not be surprised if McGregor joined Brendan Rodgers in Saudi. He said McGregor remains superb, but needs younger teammates to flourish.
The former striker added that McGregor could spearhead a major transfer overhaul. That overhaul could see seven departures from the first-team squad.
Who might go?
McAvennie named Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate among those who could move on. He also highlighted top scorer Benjamin Nygren as attracting big-money interest from across Europe.
Reports have linked Brighton with a £30 million move for Nygren. McAvennie said he would sell at such a price, provided funds are reinvested into the team.
Players McAvennie would keep
He offered a short list of players he would retain for next season. Kieran Tierney was certain to stay, he said.
- Viljami Sinisalo — praised for doing nothing wrong.
- Alistair Johnston — liked by McAvennie.
- Yang — described as most improved player this year.
- Jota — valued for flair and game control.
- Arne Engels — seen as gaining quality after a spell out.
Thoughts on Reo Hatate and others
McAvennie said he rates Hatate highly as a midfielder. He was nonetheless puzzled by Hatate’s inconsistent form this season.
The Centenary legend warned that losing McGregor, Maeda and Hatate would leave large gaps. He stressed the need to replace departing players wisely.
Scott Brown’s support and captaincy context
Scott Brown, who handed McGregor the armband in 2021, defended the captain in an exclusive to Filmogaz.com. Brown urged critics to ease up and noted McGregor still has a significant role.
McAvennie countered that, at 33 in June, McGregor might seek a final big contract abroad. He said the midfielder would remain a catalyst if surrounded by younger legs.
Transfer strategy concerns
McAvennie criticised the club for not always reinvesting transfer income. He insisted any large sale must be used to strengthen the squad.
The former striker wants more flair and quality on the pitch. He hopes managers will start players like Engels to bring that spark.
