Pokémon Winds and Waves Officially Revealed: Meet Gen 10 Starters Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua
Pokémon Winds and Waves

The internet collectively lost its mind this morning. Game Freak and The Pokémon Company dropped the biggest announcement of Pokémon Day 2026 at the very end of their Pokémon Presents showcase — the official reveal of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, the Generation 10 mainline titles, alongside three brand new starters that the fandom is already declaring iconic. The Gen 10 games have a release date of 2027 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

Pokémon Winds and Waves: A Tropical Archipelago Awaits

The reveal trailer offered a brief glimpse at the setting for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, showcasing tropical environments surrounded by a vast ocean. The RPG takes place in a Southeast Asian archipelago region with a map filled with lush tropical islands surrounded by water.

The trailer started by looking at a sketchbook showing hand-drawn images of moments from different entries in past generations, with a Pikachu as the focus. After hearing a knock at the door, the new trainer opens it to see two Pikachu in festive beachwear. From there, the trailer transitions to actual gameplay footage showing the new region and areas. Pokémon Winds and Waves is confirmed to be open world, with Game Freak unphased by Scarlet and Violet's prior technical woes.

Meet Browt: The Grass-Type Bean Chick Pokémon

Browt is the Grass-type starter, categorized as the "Bean Chick Pokémon." It stands at 1 foot tall and weighs 7.7 pounds. Its ability is Overgrow. Its official description reads: "This Pokémon runs about energetically while photosynthesizing using the leaves on its brow. It's lively, but it can also be a bit clumsy."

Browt's name is a blend of "bean" and "sprout," and also a reference to its prominent brow, which looks like a stalk. If it is bean-themed, there is a chance its final form will be more flower-like than Decidueye, the last birdlike Grass-type starter final evolution in the series. Browt is a surly-looking green owl with a pair of leaves rising from its beak.

Meet Pombon: The Fire-Type Puppy Pokémon

Pombon is the Fire-type starter, categorized as the "Puppy Pokémon." It stands at 1 foot 4 inches tall and weighs 14.8 pounds. Its ability is Blaze. Its official description reads: "The area below its throat glows faintly from the heat-generating organ within its lungs. This Pokémon is guileless and friendly."

Pombon resembles a Pomeranian dog, with the "bon" in its name possibly coming from "bonfire," matching the fiery shape of its fur. Its final form is likely going to be a big fluffy dog that is either on fire or breathes fire. Fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive — Pombon is already being called the early fan-favorite of the trio by a wide margin.

Meet Gecqua: The Water-Type Water Gecko Pokémon

Gecqua is the Water-type starter, categorized as the "Water Gecko Pokémon." It stands at 1 foot tall and weighs 9.5 pounds. Its ability is Torrent. Its official description reads: "This Pokémon launches springy balls of water from its tail. Gecqua is very intelligent and maneuvers shrewdly while putting on airs."

Gecqua is a large-headed blue gecko with a teardrop mark between its eyes. Similarities will certainly be made with Treecko, another gecko-like starter from Ruby and Sapphire, but it is a strong fit for the game's tropical environment. Early leaks suggest Gecqua's final evolution may be the most visually striking of the three — though those rumors should be taken with significant caution.

Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu: Two Special Pikachu Divide the Fandom

Two special Pikachu wearing beach attire were also shown off, named Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Their exact involvement in Winds and Waves remains unknown, but they will likely be obtainable depending on the version selected. Fans are already ripping into the new Pikachu characters, with Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu drawing mixed reactions across social media.

Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves will launch simultaneously worldwide in 2027 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, and a Brazilian Portuguese localization is confirmed for the first time in franchise history. With the FireRed and LeafGreen ports live today and Gen 10 officially unveiled, Pokémon Day 2026 has delivered one of the most stacked 30th anniversary celebrations in the franchise's entire three-decade history.
