Qantas Revamps Frequent Flyer Program Amid $1.46 Billion Profit Surge

Qantas has announced significant changes to its Frequent Flyer program amid a record $1.46 billion profit for the half-year. These enhancements aim to adapt the program to a shifting loyalty landscape.

Changes to Frequent Flyer Program

The updates will allow members to earn status credits through everyday spending, not just flights. This applies to transactions with retail partners, utility providers, and Qantas credit cards.

Retail Partnerships

  • Qantas has partnered with hundreds of retailers, including:
    • Woolworths
    • Myer
    • David Jones
    • Dymocks

These changes will take effect later this year, alongside announcements of additional major partners.

New Rollover Benefits

Members will also gain the ability to retain status credits at the end of each membership year. Up to 50% of leftover status credits can be rolled over into the next year:

  • 100 credits for Silver members
  • 350 credits for Gold members
  • 500 credits for Platinum members

This benefit replaces previous loyalty bonuses and aims to enhance member engagement.

Lifetime Gold Member Incentives

Qantas will reward its Lifetime Gold members with a unique opportunity to earn up to five complimentary years of Platinum status for every 10,000 status credits accumulated.

Program Simplification

Starting later this year, Qantas will phase out the Points Club and Green Tier programs to enhance the overall clarity of the Frequent Flyer structure. New avenues to reward environmentally conscious members will be explored.

Updated Status Tier Requirements

From early 2027, members will require more points to maintain their status tiers. Gold status will now need 700 points for both attainment and retention, a change from the previous requirement of 600 points for retention.

Profit Surge and Job Growth

Qantas recently reported a pre-tax profit of $1.46 billion, bolstered by growth in the Jetstar airline, fleet renewal, and increased domestic travel demand. This profit marks an improvement of $71 million from the previous period.

  • The airline plans to create 8,500 jobs in Australia by 2030, including:
    • 3,500 cabin crew
    • Over 1,000 pilots

New Direct Flights

Expanding its international reach, Qantas will introduce direct flights between Australia and Las Vegas. This route is expected to save travelers up to five hours.

Addressing Cost Challenges

Despite recent successes, Qantas faces rising costs, including airport charges that have increased at twice the rate of inflation. CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized ongoing efforts to manage these costs without impacting air travel affordability.
