Cjng: cjng leader El Mencho killed as military operation sparks violence and reprisals

One day after a security operation that resulted in the killing of Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho, authorities say the action touched off a wave of violence and reprisals across Jalisco and other states. The fallout is now shaping local security, education and economic activity in and around Puerto Vallarta.

Cjng leader Nemesio Oseguera was located and killed after cabins in the Sierra

The operation that ended with the death of Nemesio Oseguera, alias El Mencho, targeted the head of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and one of the country’s most wanted traffickers. Officials say he was hiding in cabins in the Sierra de Jalisco with a decena de escoltas (ten bodyguards). Authorities trace his location to a visit by one of his parejas sentimentales, which allowed special forces of the Mexican Army to carry out the operation that killed him.

Multiple official tallies list dozens of deaths and arrests after the operation

The Government of Jalisco reported that the operation left 25 agents of the Guardia Nacional dead, a worker of the Fiscalía de Jalisco, the custodio of Puerto Vallarta and a woman among the fatalities. In a Monday press conference the Government of Mexico said the action killed 25 National Guard agents, a custodio and an agent of the Fiscalía General. On the criminal side, authorities say at least 30 presuntos narcotraficantes died and 70 people were detained in the violence that followed.

Puerto Vallarta suffered major arson and a mass prison escape

The violence included at least two hundred vehicles burned in Puerto Vallarta and dozens of comercios set on fire across several states. Puerto Vallarta was singled out repeatedly as one of the territories most affected; local officials confirmed the fuga de 23 reos from the penal de Ixtapa, north of Puerto Vallarta, after the operation.

Investigations opened, public services and schools to resume on a staggered schedule

The Fiscalía General de la República opened 57 carpetas de investigación tied to the violence in 14 states. Governor Pablo Lemus announced on Monday that Jalisco would recover normality in the majority of the state starting Wednesday, with economic activities restarting "en su totalidad" on Tuesday and classes returning to presencial on Wednesday. Authorities in other states have announced classes will resume Tuesday, while Jalisco will begin Wednesday.

Officials say blockades are lifted and urge calm as security work continues

The Gobierno de Jalisco has said there are no longer reports of bloqueos across the state, and President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Monday that the country had regained normality and that the narcobloqueos on the highways had been lifted. Authorities transmitted a message of tranquilidad to the public and said the situation was under control. Governor Lemus, while optimistic about a return to routine, warned specifically about Puerto Vallarta and said: "De continuar como hasta ahora, mañana se planteará en la mesa estatal de seguridad levantar el Código Rojo.
