Boston Blizzard 2026

A historic nor'easter bomb cyclone is hammering Greater Boston, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island with record-breaking ferocity Monday, February 23, 2026 ET. Power outages are surging by the hour, blizzard conditions are producing near-hurricane-force winds, and the storm is on track to be one of the most destructive in New England's history. Here is everything you need to know — updated right now.

Massachusetts Power Outages Surge Past 212,000 — National Grid Outage Map

Over 212,000 customers were without power across the eastern part of Massachusetts as of 9:00 AM ET, as damaging winds battered power lines. Cape Cod is the hardest hit area, with more than 103,000 without power in Barnstable County alone.

The nor'easter has left almost half of Scituate without power, including all of the Humarock area. Wind gusts in Scituate have exceeded 60 miles per hour since early Monday morning. Since utility companies will not start restoration efforts until winds drop below 35 mph, residents should expect several days without power.

The National Grid power outage map is updating every five minutes. Customers can check their estimated restoration time by logging into their National Grid account or by calling 1-800-465-1212.

RI Energy Power Outages: Rhode Island Braces for Multi-Day Crisis

There were 13,562 Rhode Island Energy customers without power as of 6:45 AM ET Monday, concentrated mostly in Washington and Providence counties. That number is expected to climb dramatically as the storm's worst conditions continue through midday.

RI Energy spokesperson Brian Schuster warned: "This is going to be a big one. We're anticipating 100,000 to 150,000 outages. It's going to be a multi-day restoration effort." He confirmed that 200 line crews and 80 forestry crews are standing by and that crews cannot safely begin restoration work until the storm passes.

Boston Weather: WCVB Snow Totals and Conditions Right Now

The National Weather Service confirmed highest snowfall amounts of 18 to 24 inches with pockets up to 30 inches possible. The greatest risk for tree damage and power outages is in southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where 55 to 75 mph wind gusts are combining with heavy, wet snow. The heaviest snowfall rates are running from 4:00 AM through noon ET.

Snow totals rose to nearly 20 inches in southern Rhode Island — including Exeter, South Kingstown, and North Kingstown — by early Monday morning. Boston pushed above 5 inches with widespread totals of 7 to 15 inches across Central and Eastern Massachusetts. Chatham clocked a 73 mph wind gust, just 1 mph below hurricane strength. Boston has seen max wind gusts just under 60 mph.

MBTA Storm Schedule: Boston Transit Status

The MBTA is running commuter rail, bus, and subway on a reduced storm schedule. The Mattapan Line trolley has been replaced by shuttle buses and all ferry service is canceled. Buses are on modified snow routes. The MBTA warned that service will likely be impacted on Tuesday as well.

No commercial flights are expected at Logan Airport today. Massachusetts Port Authority is aiming to keep one runway open for emergencies, but noted that with whiteout conditions that may not be possible. All commercial flights at T.F. Green International Airport in Rhode Island are canceled through 6:20 PM ET.

Boston Schools Closed — State of Emergency in Effect

All Boston public schools are closed Monday. Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency Sunday and issued a plea to all Massachusetts residents: "This is one to take seriously. Our ask and plea, as always, is going to be to please stay off the roads for the safety of the folks who are out there trying to clear the roads, keep power on, and keep people safe."

Speed on I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) has been reduced to 40 mph in both directions from the New York border to Boston. Truck travel on interstate highways remains restricted until further notice, with exceptions for food, fuel, and medical supply deliveries.

The storm's heaviest bands are expected to lift by early afternoon ET. If you have lost power, do not use generators indoors, stay away from downed lines, and report outages immediately to your utility provider.
