Spotify Introduces Video Toggle Feature for All Users

Spotify has announced a new feature allowing users to disable all video content in its app. This enhancement aims to provide a more audio-centric experience while maintaining the option for video if desired.

New Video Toggle Feature for All Users

Starting this month, Spotify users worldwide can control their video experience directly from their subscription settings. This functionality is particularly beneficial for account managers in Family Plans, who can toggle video settings for any plan member.

Key Features of the Video Toggle

  • Available for all users, including those on Basic, Premium, Individual, Duo, Family, and Student plans.
  • Allows switching “Canvas” visuals and video content on or off.
  • Applicable across mobile, desktop, web, and TV platforms.

Previously, such controls were limited to managed accounts for users under 13. Spotify found that 60% of these managed accounts opted to disable video content. This adjustment reflects Spotify’s ongoing effort to cater to various user preferences.

Implementation and Benefits

Users can access this new feature by navigating to the “Content and display” option within the app settings. Once adjusted, preferences will apply across all devices.

Despite the new controls, users will still encounter video ads and Canvas-like visuals on certain audio advertisements. This move seems strategically aimed at addressing concerns from regulators about the influence of video content on younger audiences.

Spotify’s Video Strategy Evolution

Spotify has progressively embraced video features, having launched Canvas videos in 2018 and video podcasts in 2020. The addition of music videos in 2024 marked a significant step in competing against platforms like YouTube.

By enabling users to control video visibility, Spotify enhances the flexibility of its platform. This change ensures that those who prefer an audio-only experience can enjoy music without distraction while still benefiting from video content available to others.
