Popeyes’ Rapid Growth in the UK
Founded in New Orleans in 1972, Popeyes entered the UK market in 2021. Since then, the chain has witnessed significant growth. In 2025 alone, Popeyes plans to open over 45 restaurants, drive-thrus, and delivery kitchens across the country, bringing its total to more than 100 locations nationwide.
- Current locations in Merseyside include:
- Speke
- Kirkby
- Bromborough
- Lord Street
Details on the New Liverpool Location
The new Popeyes restaurant will be located on Ranelagh Street, just minutes from the Lord Street site. Posters have already appeared at the location, which was previously home to the Go Outdoors Express store. This closure was part of a series of shutdowns that affected the area earlier this year.
The opening has been officially announced on Popeyes’ website under the “Restaurants Coming Soon” section. The brand aims to enhance its presence in the city through this development.
Recent Openings and Promotions
Popeyes recently opened a restaurant at Croft Retail Park on January 30, 2025. To commemorate the launch, they offered free deluxe chicken sandwiches for a year to the first three customers, showcasing their commitment to customer engagement.
Tom Crowley, CEO of Popeyes UK, expressed enthusiasm about expanding into the Wirral area and continuing to share the unique flavor of New Orleans with fans across the UK.
Competition in the Fried Chicken Market
The expansion of Popeyes coincides with similar growth from other competitors, notably the YouTube collective known as The Sidemen. Their Sides fried chicken chain is also expanding, with plans for additional locations, including a new branch in Liverpool.
- Noteworthy details about The Sidemen’s Sides brand:
- Launched in 2021
- Currently operates five locations in the UK and one in Singapore

The competition in the fried chicken sector is heating up, as both brands strive to capture the growing market in the UK. With Popeyes making its mark in Merseyside, food lovers can expect diverse offerings and thrilling developments in the coming year.
