Hurricane Harry Devastates Southern Italy’s Agriculture
Recent reports indicate that Hurricane Harry has severely impacted agriculture in Southern Italy. The storm particularly affected citrus-growing regions in Sicily, notably in the provinces of Catania and Syracuse. Agricultural associations estimate that production losses range between 35% and 45%.
Extent of Damage from Hurricane Harry
The hurricane devastated approximately 28,000 hectares of citrus groves. This area includes around 800 hectares dedicated to organic farming. The destruction was not limited to citrus; extensive damage occurred in aquaculture and greenhouse vegetable production in Sardinia.
Impact on Agriculture
- Sicily: Damaged around 28,000 hectares of citrus groves.
- Sardinia: Severe losses reported in aquaculture and greenhouse vegetable production.
- Estimated total losses on both islands are around €2 billion.
Many citrus groves were unprotected and suffered significant destruction from high winds. Reports from Gerardo Diana, president of the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia producers’ consortium, highlight that a large portion of the citrus harvest was lost due to the storm. Some oranges were salvaged for juice production.
Call for Government Support
Sicilian citrus producers are demanding government assistance. They are seeking advances from EU agricultural subsidies, funding for protective nets, and greenhouses to safeguard future crops.
Additional Agricultural Concerns
Aquaculture in southern Sardinia also faced shocking damages. The Sardinian Fish Breeders Association reported that installations were compromised by waves reaching heights of up to ten meters. Meanwhile, greenhouse vegetable crops are suffering from continuous rainfall, flooding, and pest issues that thrive in wet conditions.
Long-Term Agricultural Challenges
Cristiano Fini, president of the Italian Farmers Association (CIA), emphasized the severe losses due to chronic neglect and lack of maintenance. He noted that extreme weather events now affect 10% of Italy’s land and nearly one in ten Italians. Effective infrastructure, prevention, and oversight are essential to combat the unpredictability of climate change.
In total, Hurricane Harry caused extensive damage, especially across Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria. Initial government response includes €100 million allocated for emergency aid.
