Ake & Humphris Launches Permanent Wine Bar and Shop: Step Into The Wine Library
Wine enthusiasts in Harrogate have a new destination to explore with the launch of Ake & Humphris’s permanent wine bar and shop. Situated on Oxford Street, this venue marks the third location for the acclaimed wine merchant, complementing their existing sites on Leeds Road and in Collingham.
Exclusive Launch Event
The official opening was celebrated with an exclusive event featuring flowing Champagne and delicious canapés from local caterer Nomad Catering. Notable local figures, including Tom Gordon MP and Martin Mann, Chief Executive of Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce, attended to support this new addition to the town’s independent business landscape.
Vision and Design
Paul Auty, one of the founders of Ake & Humphris, emphasized the importance of independent businesses in preserving the character of high streets. He expressed excitement about relocating the shop to the town center after 15 years. The interior, designed by Mark Hinchcliffe, offers a quirky and cozy atmosphere reminiscent of “Oscar Wilde’s secret wine library.” Unique decor includes:
- Upcycled 1920s wardrobes for product displays
- A bespoke chandelier made from antique copper wine funnels
- A library ladder for accessing premium vintages and whiskies
A Homecoming for the Founders
The opening is significant for co-founders Edward Ake and Jonathan Humphris, who first met as students at Harrogate Grammar School. Since launching their business in 2010, Ake & Humphris has built a strong reputation within the local community. The new Oxford Street venue solidifies their commitment to offering an elevated wine experience.
A Unique Experience
Reflecting on the store’s mission, Jonathan Humphris highlighted the need for unique experiences amid a changing retail landscape. He stated, “In an era of high streets dominated by takeaways and betting shops, we aim to provide a cozy retreat for good wine and conversation.”
Official Opening
Dignitary Fiona Movley MBE officially inaugurated the venue, celebrating its potential as a cherished community space. “This represents a labor of love and adds tremendous value to Harrogate,” she remarked.
Visiting Ake & Humphris
Ake & Humphris invites both locals and visitors to discover their extensive wine collection and relax in the new bar. The Oxford Street location operates seven days a week, with hours from 11 AM to 10 PM and adjusted hours on Tuesdays from 4 PM to 10 PM.
