Top Telecom Provider Warns: ‘We’re Out of Time’
A prominent network infrastructure provider has issued a warning to businesses regarding the impending end of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). In just 12 months, this century-old analogue system will be decommissioned, leaving many businesses at risk of increased costs or complete service loss.
Impending PSTN Shutdown
The PSTN has long served as the backbone of the UK’s telecommunications, powering various services such as ISDN and ADSL broadband over copper lines. This infrastructure supports critical systems like card machines and smart meters, which are integral to hospitals, schools, and emergency services.
BT Group, the parent company of Openreach, has confirmed that the PSTN will officially retire by January 31, 2027. As part of this transition, Openreach is working to phase out legacy products that depend on this outdated technology, categorized as Wholesale Line Rental (WLR).
Digital Transition and Price Increases
Digital services are quickly gaining traction, with Voice over IP (VoIP) technology becoming increasingly popular. Openreach has resolved technical challenges associated with migrating to new infrastructure, ensuring that even vulnerable telecare users are protected during this change.
There are currently around 2.8 million lines still operating on the PSTN network, with over half a million serving business customers. Companies that delay their transition to modern digital systems will encounter significant tiered price increases for WLR products:
- April 1, 2026: Prices increase by 20%
- July 1, 2026: An additional 40% increase
- October 1, 2026: A final 40% increase, effectively doubling rental costs compared to 2025 rates
Critical Steps for Businesses
To mitigate risks associated with the PSTN phase-out, Openreach advises businesses to take the following actions:
- Review Assets: Assess any equipment that relies on PSTN. Contact your service provider if unsure.
- Test Equipment: Utilize Openreach’s free testing labs to ensure compatibility with All-IP networks.
- Switch to Digital: Transition to a digital solution as soon as possible to avoid penalties.
Openreach is committed to assisting businesses during this transition, offering resources and support tailored to specific needs. James Lilley, Director of All-IP at Openreach, emphasized the urgency of the situation: “There’s no time left to stall. The PSTN analogue network is obsolete and increasingly costly to maintain.”
Most major communications providers have already migrated their customers to digital services. Businesses still utilizing PSTN should urgently seek alternatives to avoid incurring additional costs. For more assistance, visit Filmogaz.com or contact your service provider directly.
