Qualicum Beach Exhibit Explores ‘What Would Hockney Do?’ Theme
Qualicum Beach is currently hosting an art exhibition that delves into the creative spirit of acclaimed British artist David Hockney. Titled “What Would Hockney Do?”, this exhibition is curated by Sylvie Peltier and is displayed at the Old School House Arts Centre. The showcase will be open until March 7, 2026.
Inspired by David Hockney
Sylvie Peltier, a passionate fan of Hockney, felt compelled to explore his work further after discovering his vibrant pieces. Initially drawn to his iconic painting “Mount Fuji and Flowers,” Peltier has since deepened her admiration for Hockney’s diverse artistic expressions.
David Hockney’s Influence
- Artistic Approach: Hockney is celebrated for his bold use of color and innovative techniques across various media, including painting, drawing, collage, and photography.
- Personal Connections: Peltier is inspired by Hockney’s ability to paint subjects of personal significance, especially a series dedicated to his dachshunds.
- Emotional Reflection: Hockney’s works often reflect his experiences, particularly during the AIDS crisis, conveying deep emotional narratives.
Peltier aims to channel Hockney’s spirit by depicting the joy found in her surroundings—specifically, the rabbits of Qualicum Beach. Her artwork radiates the same joy and color that Hockney achieves in his creations.
