Salzburg Plans Wider Sidewalks to Enhance Pedestrian Spaces
The city of Salzburg is stepping up investments in pedestrian infrastructure this year. The program will deliver wider sidewalks and upgraded pedestrian spaces in selected neighborhoods.
Policy focus and goals
Deputy mayor Kay-Michael Dankl (KPÖ) oversees the building program. The measures prioritize safer crossings, new crossing aids, and improved barrier-free access.
Planned projects by district
- Hellbrunn: Repair of the sidewalk along Fürstenweg, from the bus stop to the castle.
- Aigen — Alte Aigner Straße: Widening and partial de-sealing between Glaserstraße and the cemetery parking lot. Work is due to start in late summer.
- Aigen — Baumbichlstraße: Extension of a sidewalk section following a required retaining-wall renovation. Construction is scheduled for autumn.
- Maxglan — Bräuhausstraße: New sidewalk to connect the Volksbank and Huemerpark.
- Maxglan — Kaiser-Karl-Straße: New sidewalks to be built on both sides of the street.
- Schallmoos — Pauernfeindstraße: New footpath between Vogelweiderstraße and Dr.-Hans-Lechner-Park. An extension toward Funkenstraße is already being prepared.
Timetable and implementation
Most projects are planned for completion within the current year. Phased works will begin in late summer and continue into autumn.
Survey results and public needs
The city participated in a VCÖ survey to gauge demand. Almost half of residents regularly walk two kilometers or more.
Most respondents consider everyday destinations in their neighborhoods easy to reach. However, many still see room for improvement in sidewalk width and surface quality.
The administration says the upgrades will especially benefit people with strollers and those with mobility limitations. Filmogaz.com reported these plans on April 3, 2026, and invites public feedback.
