BYD, Zeekr, Geely Lead EV Sales as Tesla Slump Signals Shift

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia experienced a notable shift in January 2026, indicating a change in market dynamics. Chinese EV manufacturers, including BYD, Zeekr, and Geely, have claimed significant market shares, moving ahead of Tesla. This month saw EVs accounting for 8.4% of total new car sales, a decrease from 10.2% in December 2025, yet a marked improvement from 4.4% in January the previous year.

Shift in Sales Rankings

According to recent figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), a total of 7,409 battery electric vehicles were sold in January. This was in contrast to 5,161 plug-in hybrids and 15,131 mild hybrids. A significant drop in Tesla Model Y and Model 3 deliveries contributed to the overall decline.

The BYD Sealion 7 emerged as the best-selling EV for the month, registering 1,171 sales. This figure surpassed the combined sales of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, indicating a strong competitive shift. Here are the top sellers:

Market Commentary

Tony Weber, CEO of FCAI, noted the decline in petrol vehicle sales and the stable growth of hybrid and battery electric vehicles. He emphasized that despite January’s drop from December, the month still outperformed January of the previous year. With strong sales offers anticipated, 2026 may prove to be a breakout year for EVs in Australia.

Future Trends in Electric Vehicle Sales

With the emergence of affordable options like the BYD Atto 2 and positive sales momentum from brands like Zeekr and Geely, the landscape for EVs in Australia is evolving. The surge in registrations signifies an increasing consumer interest in electric mobility and highlights the potential for continued growth.
