WILD System to Handle Freshwater Fishing Licenses for 2026-27 Season

WILD System to Handle Freshwater Fishing Licenses for 2026-27 Season

Anglers in British Columbia will benefit from a new online system for purchasing freshwater fishing licences beginning on February 9, 2026. This initiative is part of the province’s move to streamline licensing processes, enabling easier access for the fishing community.

Introduction of WILD for Freshwater Fishing Licences

The Wildlife Information and Licensing Data system (WILD) will now serve as the primary platform for both hunting and fishing licences. This online service aims to enhance convenience for anglers by consolidating multiple transactions into one system.

Registration for Fish and Wildlife ID (FWID)

  • Starting in 2026, all anglers must register for a Fish and Wildlife ID (FWID) to purchase licences through WILD.
  • A FWID links to the angler’s personal profile in the system and will replace previous angler numbers after the current licence year.
  • Anglers can register and retrieve their FWID via Basic BCeID or a BC Services Card Account.

Changes in Licence Verification

From April 1, 2026, anglers will no longer need to carry paper or digital copies of most fishing licences. Instead, their FWID and valid identification will suffice as proof for basic angling and conservation licences.

However, a paper copy of the licence remains necessary for the Conservation Surcharge Stamp to record catch details.

Advantages of the New System

  • Streamlined registration and identity verification.
  • Improved security and login options.
  • Reduction in the need to carry printed licences.
  • A unified system for accessing both fishing and hunting licences.
  • Enhanced account recovery options for forgotten FWIDs.

Recreational Fishing Licence Pre-Sales

Pre-sales for the 2026-27 recreational fishing licences will commence in early March 2026. This change supports the mandates of the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and enhances the management of recreational fisheries.

Community Support and Impact

Community leaders, such as Andrew Wilson and Rod Clapton, have expressed support for the transition to WILD, emphasizing its potential to improve compliance, conservation, and overall access to fishing opportunities for local anglers.

Funding and Fees

The fees collected from fishing licences will continue to fund essential research and educational programs through the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, while maintaining the current fee structure. This modernized system aims to support approximately 350,000 recreational anglers across the province each year.
