Oscars to Showcase Performances of Only 2 Best Original Song Nominees

The upcoming 98th Academy Awards will feature a new format for showcasing nominees for Best Original Song. Scheduled for March 15, 2023, the ceremony will include limited live performances, focusing on only two of the five nominated songs.

Highlights of the Best Original Song Nominees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that this year’s performances will spotlight “I Lied to You” from *Sinners* and “Golden” from *KPop Demon Hunters*. These selections aim to emphasize how music enhances storytelling in film.

Performers and Their Creations

  • I Lied to You
    • Composed by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson
  • Golden
    • Composed by EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu. Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seon, and Teddy Park

The Academy’s decision, as communicated by executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan and producer Taryn Hurd, allows for a more dynamic and engaging viewing experience. They noted that each of the remaining three nominees will be represented through curated film clips, reinforcing their connection to the films they accompany.

Remaining Nominees

The nominees not featured in live performance include:

  • Dear Me from *Diane Warren: Relentless* (music and lyrics by Diane Warren)
  • Train Dreams from *Train Dreams* (music by Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner, lyrics by Nick Cave)
  • Sweet Dreams of Joy from *Viva Verdi!* (music and lyrics by Nicholas Pike)

Each of these composers, including Pike, expressed enthusiasm about their nominations. Pike previously indicated his desire to have his piece performed live during the ceremony.

Historical Context

This change in format follows a trend where only seven of the past ceremonies, since 2012, have included live performances of all nominated songs. The 2023 and 2024 events were among the exceptions, showcasing complete performances.

The decision was also influenced by a need to create a tighter, more enjoyable broadcast, echoing industry sentiments after recent award shows. The 98th Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Conan O’Brien serving as the host. The Academy continues to navigate challenges in live music presentations while responding to audience expectations.
