Recent Pollution Incidents
In October 2024, mysterious black balls containing human faeces and harmful substances appeared on the beach. This troubling event prompted a clean-up by workers in protective gear. The black balls have been traced back to an outfall connected to the Malabar wastewater treatment plant. Historical records show a similar issue with pollution at famous Bondi Beach during the 1970s and 1980s.
A Troubling History
Coogee’s challenges with pollution are not new. In 2008, an ice cream from a popular beachfront location was found to contain faecal particles, which raised significant concerns. Tests confirmed that the dessert had an “offensive odour” and characteristics resembling human waste.
Local Culture and Challenges
Despite its unsavory issues, Coogee remains a popular destination for beachgoers. Named from the Indigenous word “koojah,” meaning “stinky place,” it has seen a continuous influx of visitors. Locals, including members of the Bidjigal people, have shared this history, often humorously warning outsiders away.

The intention is to resolve these environmental challenges so that everyone can enjoy one of Sydney’s top beaches safely. However, some locals remain skeptical of change, playfully dubbing the area as “Poogee” to warn potential visitors of its ongoing environmental issues.
