UW–Madison Cancels Friday Classes

In light of frigid temperatures, the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW–Madison) has canceled all classes on Friday, January 23. This decision comes as an Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Dane County, predicting wind chills between -30°F to -40°F.

Class Cancellation Details

The cancellation applies to all class formats, including:

  • Lectures
  • Laboratory sessions
  • Discussion sections

Students are advised to contact their instructors with any questions regarding this change.

Campus Operations Update

Despite the cancellation of classes, all other campus operations will proceed as usual. Employees are expected to fulfill their work commitments unless weather conditions inhibit their ability to do so. In such cases, employees should inform their supervisors and discuss alternative work arrangements or leave options.

Campus buildings will remain open during regular business hours, and essential services, including University Housing, the Wisconsin Union, and food services, will operate normally. Athletic events, including men’s and women’s hockey, are also scheduled to take place as planned.

Transportation and Parking Information

To accommodate employees commuting to campus during the extreme cold, parking permits will not be required on Friday in designated lots, including:

  • 16
  • 26
  • 34
  • 45
  • 57
  • 59
  • 60

This policy also applies to off-campus lots serviced by shuttles, specifically lots 202, 204, and 206. Employees should note that parking regulations will remain enforced in certain restricted areas, such as reserved stalls and fire lanes.

Stay Safe and Informed
